Nexus Mods has found itself at the center of controversy after removing political mods for NetEase’s Marvel Rivals. However, the platform reminds users that it was “simply complying with existing file hosting policies.”
What happened?
The removed mods replaced Captain America’s face with Donald Trump/Joe Biden heads. The site’s owner, Dark0ne, responded on Reddit to comments about “Nexus Mods censorship” after the Trump mod was removed. Dark0ne clarified that the Biden mod was removed at the same time as the Trump mod (January 2) to avoid accusations of bias. However, this did not stop the flow of outrage and threats.
Official response
Today, Nexus Mods issued a public statement: “The site has always been about creating a positive modding community. Unfortunately, some uploads have become a magnet for conflict and bullying. Political mods violate the site’s policies that have been in place for many years. These policies are intended to prevent conflict and maintain a friendly atmosphere.”
